Industry Leader Thermacell Repellents, Helps Canadians Combat Ticks and Lyme Disease this Spring

Thermacell Tick Control Tubes are the no-spray, environmentally safe, simple way to kill deer ticks and prevent them from spreading Lyme disease and Powassan virus to family members and pets.

As Canadians from coast-to-coast prepare to set up their backyards and cottages this spring, they are urged to be on the lookout for ticks, with species populations on the rise in recent years. Over the past 22 years, Thermacell, a leading manufacturer of area mosquito repellents and other insect control products, has protected millions of people from the harmful effects of mosquitoes. Building off the incredible success of their Mosquito Repellent Line, Thermacell is proud to launch their Tick Control Tubes exclusively in Canadian Tire locations across the country.

The majority of Canadians, *(79%) are prone to contract Lyme from nymphal ticks in May to August when the weather is warmer, and children are on break from school. Lyme disease is the leading vector borne disease in Canada and has grown exponentially in the past five years – with 88 per cent of Lyme cases deriving from Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia. Thermacell Tick Control Tubes are an effective, novel and environmentally friendly solution to combat ticks and prevent them from spreading Lyme disease and Powassan virus to your family members and pets.

“Canada has experienced a rapid increase of Lyme disease cases in recent years, and with 75 per cent** of tick-related cases occurring within 100 feet of our homes, it is essential that Canadians have the opportunity to care for their outdoor spaces, as they look to spend more time with their family and loved ones this season.” said Kyle Adelman, senior marketing manager at Thermacell® Repellents, Inc. “Unlike some products that broadcast pesticides and kill beneficial bugs, Thermacell is a no-spray, eco-friendly solution. It is highly targeted, doesn’t harm people, pets or the environment when used as directed, and the tube is biodegradable.”

Thermacell Tick Control Tubes work with mother nature to kill ticks in your yard by partnering with an unlikely ally – field mice. The innovative system turns mice from tick hosts into tick eliminators. With sustainability being top of mind for many Canadians, Thermacell provides an extremely eco-friendly solution; the cardboard tubes are completely biodegradable, and the permethrin solution is tightly bound to the cotton fibers. Most importantly, when used as directed, it does not cause harm to people, animals, or the environment.

While Canadians may understand the importance and need to combat Lyme disease, many are still looking for an effective and safe product to prevent the potential of transmission.

For best results, Canadians are encouraged to apply a first application of the Thermacell TickControl Tubes in April or May when immature black-legged ticks – and people, emerge as spring arrives and the temperatures warm up. The second application needs to be applied in late summer when additional immature black-legged ticks emerge. This step is equally important as it kills larval ticks and ends the tick lifecycle before these ticks can pass on diseases to people or pets.

Combating ticks in Canada is difficult. With only a few products on the market, most are expensive, ineffective, hard to use, or must be applied directly to the skin. Alternatively, consumers can pay for a professional tick removal service, but this can prove costly.

In a field test conducted by Harvard University researchers at The Crane Estate in Massachusetts, Tick Control Tubes virtually eliminated ticks on mice and vegetation in the treated area contributing to the protection of humans against Lyme disease. Complaints from visitors and employees about tick-bites or ticks found on skin or clothing were common before the study began, but were rare after treatment.

As spring approaches, Thermacell is committed to providing Canadians with safe and eco-friendly solutions to combat pests as they look to enjoy the outdoors this summer. Thermacell Tick Tubes are available for purchase exclusively at Canadian Tire stores.
