New Study from Thermacell Finds Majority of Canadians Say Mosquitoes Are the Worst Part of Summer

As we adjust to an era of new social norms, Canadians are still very much concerned about protecting themselves against mosquitoes during the Spring and Summer seasons. In fact, in a recently conducted survey+ by Thermacell Repellents, 80 per cent of Canadians agree that mosquitoes are one of the worst parts of summer and 90 per cent say that they can enjoy themselves more when they know they are protected against mosquito bites. Thermacell®, a leading manufacturer of area mosquito repellents and other insect control products, surveyed Canadians about their feelings towards mosquitoes and repellents. The results indicate an opportunity to spread awareness of an innovative solution to protect yourself and your family against bites.

Kiss Mosquitoes Goodbye

Despite our current climate, one fact remains – Canadians will continue to look for effective mosquito protection. 79 per cent of Canadians look for solutions to repel mosquitoes, with 60 per cent using some form of mosquito repellent, and nearly half (49%) say that the mosquito repellents they have tried do not make a difference.

“Now more than ever, there is a need for community and connection,” says Kyle Adelman, Senior Marking Manager, Thermacell. “Enjoy your time outdoors this Summer without the use of irritating sprays or smokey and ineffective candles and protect yourself and your family as you create new memories together.”

Thermacell mosquito repellers offer outdoor enthusiasts an effective and easy to use solution to guard against mosquitoes. The product line, which offers both fuel and battery-powered products, contain a powerful mosquito repellent inspired by nature – a synthetic copy of a natural repellent found in chrysanthemum. One of their most innovative products is the Patio Shield repeller which uses heat generated by a butane cartridge to activate and release the repellent. Another innovative solution is the Radius repeller which is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and functions in a similar manner as an oil diffuser. Both platforms deliver an effective odourless, and DEET-free, 15-foot barrier from mosquitoes. Refills offer season-long protection and outdoor memories.

Summer Fun – At a Distance

As Canadians continue to follow government regulations and WHO guidelines, new habits are being formed with the way people socialize and spend their time, which will become more obvious with the warmer months ahead. With a beautiful, yet somewhat short summer, Canadians will want to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible – even from the privacy of their backyards. Over half of Canadians (55%) admit that they have halted an activity and come indoors to escape mosquitoes, with 26 per cent believing they get more or worse mosquitoes bites than others. As Canadians spend this summer enjoying afternoon backyard BBQ’s, or evenings on their patios, practicing safe physical distancing from people and mosquitoes will be an easy experience with Thermacell’s 15ft. protection zone – over two times the two-meter physical distancing requirement!

Canadians also had this to say about their mosquito repellent experience

  • 38 per cent of Canadians buy a new mosquito repellent every spring
  • Almost half (47%) of Canadians hate having to frequently reapply a topical mosquito repellent
  • 32 per cent of Canadians were unaware that there are DEET-free mosquito repellent options

When searching for a mosquito repellent, Canadians look for high quality and effectiveness of the product, with 35 per cent worrying about exposing their families to the chemicals found in many mosquito repellents and 27 per cent are concerned about exposure to their pets. Choose a mosquito repellent that is not only safe for your entire family (pets included) but will also offer the protection you desire.

What’s in Your Mosquito Repellent?

Protecting yourself and your family is a priority now more than ever. While some things are out of our control, we can minimize our exposure to other harmful elements.

  • Nearly 40 per cent (38%) per cent say the fumes from the spray bothers them
  • 32 per cent say the scent of a spray or lotion mosquito repellent bothers them
  • 42 per cent do not like exposing their skin to chemicals found in spray repellents
Over 75 per cent (77%) of Canadians would like to find a mosquito repellent that is both effective and DEET-free, and half would prefer that it be odourless. You can continue to safely experience the joys of summer with your family, mosquito free with Thermacell’s innovative and effective mosquito repellents.
